“As long as their children’s behavior doesn’t directly impact them, they remain distant and comfortable with not offering any attention,” Dr. Guamotta explained, adding that they believe their children “don’t need their help” and “should learn to care for themselves.”

Dr. Guamotta adds that children of uninvolved parents may end up turning to substances when they grow older or seek substitute role models that may do more harm than good. The individual may also lack emotional and coping skills or develop self-esteem issues.

Sometimes, it may be necessary to educate an entitled person about the risks of their behavior

An entitled person can sometimes be so caught up in their own world that they forget about the consequences of their actions. In the story’s case, the irresponsible mother seemed to have overlooked the potential danger she put her children in.

And sometimes, calling out the person and reminding them about these consequences may be necessary.

Executive coach and workplace expert Stefan Falk advises doing so in a way that can make a person realize how their actions are affecting those around them, and how it may only pull everyone down, including themselves.

“If you approach the conversation from an authentic place, you might see a breakthrough,” Falk wrote in an article for CNBC .

The man called out the woman’s behavior and set proper boundaries by warning her about involving Child Protective Services. He handled their issue sensibly and, fortunately, found a solution in the end.
