From Sir Elton John to AC/DC , from Jason Momoa to Adam Sandler , from Kermit the Frog to sports teams, tributes poured in after the Black Sabbath member passed away this week at the age of 76.
Here are some of the most heartbreaking, comedic, and even eccentric tributes to the rock legend.
A photo of Ozzy Osbourne, sitting on a throne, went up on Black Sabbath’s Instagram page following his passing. The photo was taken when the band reunited for their farewell concert in Ozzy’s hometown of Birmingham, England, on July 5, just days before his passing. The show saw fellow rockers Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, and Steven Tyler from Aerosmith perform and pay tribute to him, along with 42,000 fans in the audience. “Ozzy Forever,” read the caption of the band’s Instagram tribute. Black Sabbath members, who co-founded the band with Ozzy in the late ‘60s, also shared their separate tributes online . “[We] have lost our brother,” said guitarist Tony Iommi, while Geezer Butler said, “Goodbye dear friend- thanks for all those years.” The bassist and lyricist reflected on the “great fun” they had over the years and were “glad” they “got to do it one last time” earlier this month. “You’re forever in my heart,” drummer Bill Ward wrote in his own tribute.

Sir Elton John said he was “so sad” to hear that Ozzy Osbourne had passed away at the age of 76. He shared a tribute to the “huge trailblazer,” a “true legend,” and “dear friend,” who “secured his place in the pantheon of rock gods.” “He was also one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. I will miss him dearly. To Sharon and the family, I send my condolences and love,” the British singer wrote. Back in 2004, Ozzy Osbourne shared a list of his top favorite songs of all time, and Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was part of the list. “Great melody. Great lyrics. Great song. I love Elton John!” he said at the time. Ozzy and Elton collaborated for the 2020 song Ordinary Man, in which the band frontman sang the first verse backed by the singer on the piano. AC/DC’s Highway to Hell (1979) was listed as one of Ozzy Osbourne’s favorite metal albums. Highway to Hell was the very last album that featured Bon Scott’s vocals before he passed away in 1980. He was replaced by Brian Johnson. “I love Brian Johnson but to me my good friend, the late Bon Scott, was the best singer AC/DC ever had,” he told Rolling Stone as he spoke about the album Highway to Hell. “This album was like an addiction to me,” he added. AC/DC shared a short but poignant message following Ozzy’s passing. “So sad! A great loss to all that loved him,” the band wrote.

“I can’t believe it … Ozzy’s the exact same,” Sharon Osbourne once said about the similarities between her rocker husband and Yungblud, which included eating pasta before gifts, getting drunk on airplanes, and spending their free time watching war movies. Yungblud, born Dominic Harrison, performed his rendition of Black Sabbath’s 1972 song Changes during their farewell concert. “I didn’t think you would leave so soon … the last time we met you were so full of life and your laugh filled up the room,” said singer in his tribute post. The 27-year-old vowed to “never forget” him and said his “cross around [his] neck” is the most “precious thing” he owns. The young English rocker had a close relationship with the Osbournes and first crossed paths when Ozzy and Sharon made a cameo appearance in his Funerals music video. “He’s so intelligent and so f***ing beautiful. People fear him until they hear him speak,” Yungblud told NME in a 2022 interview. “(Ozzy) said that he saw a lot of himself in me and told me, ‘Never apologize for anything. They will understand you later. Time always tells,’” he continued.

Before Led Zeppelin became Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne reportedly knew Robert, who was from the same part of England as the Black Sabbath members. Ozzy once recalled seeing him in 1968 in the streets of Birmingham and asked him what he was up to. Robert apparently said he was joining a band called The New Yardbirds, the group that went on to become Led Zeppelin. “When I heard the first two Zeppelin albums, I thought they were fucking unbelievably good,” Ozzy once told Rolling Stone . “I told Tony, ‘They’re fucking heavy.’ He said, ‘We’ll be heavier,’ and he f***ing was right.”

Parkinson’s UK Charity praised the deceased rockstar for being open about his medical condition and making others “feel less alone.” Ozzy revealed that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2020. Proceeds from Black Sabbath’s reunion this month went to several organizations like Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Acorns Children’s Hospice. “By speaking openly about both his diagnosis and life with Parkinson’s, Ozzy and all his family helped so many families in the same situation,” said Parkinson’s UK chief executive Caroline Rassell. “They normalised tough conversations and made others feel less alone with a condition that’s on the rise and affecting more people every day,” she added.

Alice Cooper believed Ozzy Osbourne wasn’t in “great shape” when he performed at Black Sabbath’s final reunion gig earlier this month. “Ozzy deserved that farewell [concert] He survived rock’n’roll but not physically as well as he should have,” he told The Times. Alice felt Ozzy had given too much of his life to rock n roll. “I saw some of the show and he was not in great shape. People shouldn’t give their whole lives, their health, to rock’n’roll. Life is bigger than that,” he added. Following the lead singer’s passing, Alice called him a “rock n roll legend” and said the “whole world” is mourning his loss. “Over his long career, he earned immense respect among his peers and from fans around the world as an unmatched showman and cultural icon,” he said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter . “I always saw Ozzy as a cross between the prince of darkness, which is the persona his fans saw, and the court jester,” Alice said, noting that the latter was a side only his friends and family saw. “When we lose one of our own, it bleeds … A titanic boulder has crashed, but rock will roll on,” he added.
